Years ago the idea behind technology was to give people more free time from work and give us a better life. So nowadays, with the possibility for the majority of people to have access to electronics and hi tech, is it true that we have more spare time and a better quality of life? Or have we become addicted to the technology that surrounds us everyday and it has suck us into it? But humans get addicted really easily to a lot of things in life and this video is also a metaphor about addictions in general, about being manipulated without even realizing it or without reacting. PROCESS: This is an audio/visual project where sound and images were developed synchronically from the beginning and where one was guide to the other and vice-versa until final completion. In order to do this, for director Giovanni Bucci was very important to be involved with writing the track together with sound designer/music producer Marco Morano. The team came up with the concept and started researching music and visuals that would suit the mood and atmosphere they wanted for the video, experimenting with sound, graphic styles and techniques. To produce this project many different disciplines and elements were used: green screen, stop motion animation, filming with macro, editing, motion graphics, visual effects, styling, make up, sound design. Return "Return" is an attempt to lead the audience through emotions and feelings of a man who has lost everything, who has lost the very awareness of himself and the world surrounding him. His life turned into a black and white movie and all he had left were his memories and burning desire to go back in time. Rich and entailing atmosphere of the film is soaked with great love and respect for legendary science fiction writers such as Ray Bradbury and Robert Sheckley. Simple plot is filled with enormous quantity of symbols and allusions, detailed analysis of which will give an attentive viewer a lot of food for thought. The film does not imply any particular moral and is open for interpretation. Each person will find something that resonates with their own experiences. The film was shot on a digital camera and had zero budget. Because light plays key role in the composition, it required a lot of extra special attention. All scenes were shot using the only light source - the Sun. Light was directed through the set via a complicated system of mirrors. Soundtrack for the film was composed by a brilliant Spanish composer Alex Conrado, famous for his work with Pedro Almodovar himself. Conrado was able to capture the mood of the film and amplified it with his amazing music. Hope that film "Return" will take a special place in your hearts. The Engagement Synopsis: Carter Moore (@iamcartermoore) and Brooke Howe (@brookehowe) had been dating for a few years when Carter decided he wanted to propose by asking Brooke to “start an adventure for a lifetime.” He decided to surprise her with a trip to Portland, but there was one problem—neither of them had ever been to Portland before. Blade Runner revisited A Tribute to BLADE RUNNER An experimental film in tribute to Ridley Scott's legendary futuristic film “Blade Runner” (1982). Created by extracting 167,819 frames from 'Blade Runner's final cut version, then assembling all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions : a square of approximately 60,000 pixels on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels. A virtual camera was then placed above this big picture which creates an illusion, because contrary to appearances, there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image that creates the animated film, a kind of "zootrope effect", like a film in front of a projector. The whole concept echoes one of the signature scenes from the film where "Deckard" (Harrison Ford) analyzes a photograph via voice recognition software. O (Omicron) When opened, Hala Stulecia was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world. With a diameter of 65m it was home to the largest dome built since the Pantheon in Rome eighteen centuries earlier. The piece proposed for the Centennial Hall of Wroclaw is based around the notion of timelessness in architecture, and the idea of what future has meant throughout the 20th century. Taking the 1910’s as a starting point (the dome was erected in 1913), historical and artistic references were used to reveal the architecture of the space. By using references such as Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or the utopian projects of Archigram to confront the different visions of the future at different times, Romain Tardy and Thomas Vaquié were interested in trying to create a vision of a future with no precise time reference. Oceania At the age of seventeen, I made an independent feature-length film called Oceania. With the help of friends and family, we filmed in the San Francisco Bay Area on a budget less than $4,000. I learned about cinematography and editing on-the-spot over many long nights and weekends. We used a volunteer cast and crew and lots of donated equipment and help. The film finally hit the big screen at the 2008 Cinequest Film Festival, closing with a sold-out audience. Oceania has since been released for free under a Creative Commons license. Big Buck Bunny Synopsis: Dans un monde coloré, tout va pour le mieux : un gros lapin se réveille et sort de sa tanière. Il respire à pleins poumons les essences du printemps et admire les papillons. Seulement, c'est sans compter la méchanceté de trois rongeurs (Frank, Rinky et Gamera) qui tuent plusieurs de ces papillons sous les yeux abasourdis du lapin. Celui-ci décide alors de se venger. Après une longue préparation de divers pièges, les trois mammifères vont respectivement se faire faucher par un tronc en balancement, se faire catapulter et finir en cerf-volant. Ce film a eu un coût de production de 150 000 euros et une durée de réalisation de 6 mois (rendu compris), qui a débuté le 1er octobre 2007, a été diffusé pour une première le 10 avril 2008 au cinéma Studio K d'Amsterdam. Le rendu final du film a été produit par des stations Solaris du Sun Grid Engine de Sun Microsystems3, qui a offert un temps de calcul de 50 000 heures4 pour le projet. Les musiques ont été produites par Jan Morgenstern. Comme pour Elephants Dream, le logiciel musical Reaktor fonctionnant sous Mac OS X a été employé. Ce sont les seules données du film n'ayant pas été produites à l'aide de logiciels libres. Le générique mentionne l'utilisation de GIMP, Python, Inkscape, SVN et Ubuntu. Congo Jazz Bosko runs into all kinds of wild animals during this jungle visit. Bosko is an animated cartoon character created by Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising in 1927 and the first recurring character in the Leon Schlesinger cartoon series Looney Tunes. "Although Harman and Ising based Bosko's looks on Felix the Cat, Bosko, like Mickey, got his personality from the blackface characters of the minstrel and vaudeville shows popular in the 1930s. Whereas Disney masked Mickey by making him a mouse, Harman and Ising made Bosko a genuine black boy. Sintel “Sintel” is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film. This 15 minute film has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. In addition to that, several crucial technical and creative targets have been realized online, by developers and artists and teams all over the world. “Sintel” commenced in May 2009, with producer Ton Roosendaal establishing a core team consisting of Colin Levy (director), David Revoy (concept art), Martin Lodewijk (story) and Jan Morgenstern (composer). In August script writer Esther Wouda was approached as a consultant, which resulted in her taking the responsibility for the entire screenplay. Esther then worked in close cooperation with Colin, David and Ton to deliver the final script early November. Meanwhile, Colin and David realized the first storyboards. Based on a public call for artists – with over 150 respondents – the Durian artist team got established in July 2009. They first met in a pre-production week in Amsterdam in August, and all decided to join the project per October 1st. With the final movie budget still unknown, the target then still was to finish the film within 7 months, with a team of 6 artists and 2 developers. At that time the team still had the hopes to be able to realize the script in a 6-8 minute film. In november, the Netherlands Film Fund approved on a substantial subsidy for Sintel, enough to extend the project to 10 months, with possible 1 or 2 extra artist seats in the final months. It was also by this time that breakdowns and animatic edits showed that the script had to be revised to become more compact, with a story structure using a flashback. In the months after, Colin’s work on the Director’s Layout – 3D animatic shots – and final designs on the grand finale gradually made the movie longer, from 9 minutes in november, to almost 12 in May. Proper story telling, to absorb an audience with convincing characters and action just takes time! With the highly anticipated extra funding from the Amsterdam Cinegrid – also funding a 4k resolution version – Ton finally could extend the team with 5 artists and a developer in March 2010. With 14 people the film then was completed for a first screening on July 18th in cinema Studio K in Amsterdam. Three artists then stayed in Amsterdam working on final shot edits, lighting design, compositing, and on the impressive 2 minute film credits. The movie ended up with a total duration of 14m:48s, 888 seconds! Sintel will premiere on September 27th 2010, in Utrecht on the Netherlands Film Festival.
